Anyone can call themselves an expert on beer. But when consumers want great beer they need help from a server who really knows beer flavors, styles, and service. They also want to buy beer from a place that understands proper storage and serving so the beer they drink will taste the way it should. Too often great beer is harmed by improper handling and service practices.
In the wine world, the word “sommelier” designates those with proven expertise in selecting, acquiring and serving fine wine. At one time, some beer servers adopted the title “beer sommelier” to tie into the credibility of the wine world. But in the years since its founding, the Cicerone Certification Program has become the industry standard for identifying those with significant knowledge and professional skills in beer sales and service. The Cicerone Certification Program offers independent assessment and certification so that industry professionals—as well as consumers—can be sure of the knowledge and skills possessed by current and prospective beer servers.
What is a Cicerone?
The word Cicerone (pronounced sis-uh-rohn) has been chosen to designate those with proven expertise in selecting, acquiring and serving today’s wide range of beers. The titles “Certified Cicerone®” and “Master Cicerone®” are protected certification trademarks. Only those who have passed the requisite test of knowledge and tasting skill can call themselves a Cicerone. A bit about Chris:
What got you into the beer business?
My Dad, really. My first real job was the fall of 97′, sorting empties, repacking breakage and all the fun second shift seasonal warehouse stuff at Try-It Distributing in Lancaster in which he (my Dad) was my boss. I’ve been around beer my whole life in some way or another because of him.
Do you have a favorite beer style?
Yes! wait…wait wait wait…no! I certainly like all beer styles and fermented beverages in general but lean towards Saisons, Sour Ales and a good Pale Ale
What does being a Certified Cicerone® mean to you?
It’s a sense of satisfaction, knowing I have something official that says I know what I’m talking about! [laughs]. There are a lot of people out there that don’t know what a Cicerone is, but when I say the word Sommelier [for beer] they go “ohhhhhhhhh ok!” I think the vocabulary will fill in with time. I don’t go a day without having to use some aspect of my certification, it’s nice.

A bit about Jason:
What got you into the beer business?
Hello, nice to talk to you. I have been working at Consumers Beverages for the last 15 years! What brought me to this company was simply trying to find a part time job while attending college. While at Consumers, I tried my first craft beer, Anchor Liberty Ale! Let me say, it was not a love at first sip. Over time, I enhanced my experience and now enjoy the most bitter IPA’s to the most robust stouts.
Do you have a favorite beer style?
If I had to pick one beer,
Guinness would satisfy me the most, on the golf course in July or after playing basketball in December.
What does being a Certified Cicerone® mean to you?
Continually learning and gaining knowledge in the industry has been very beneficial to myself and company. Helping customers with their questions, and assisting in their decisions, has gave confidence and enhanced the customers experience. I hope and look forward in meeting and assisting you in the future. CHEERS! – Jason T. Wheeler
